The Stendig Calendar

That large calendar you may see adorning the walls of aesthetically pleasing apartments on Instagram is most likely the Stendig Calendar. Its unique, graphic style has been iconic since its creation, back in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli. It is a simple yet timeless, functional design, being a staple piece for interior designers and architects and brings a touch of mid-century modern style to any space. If you haven’t seen one by now, where have you been?

The calendar consists of bold numerals in Helvetica typeface, in black and white which alternate with every new month. Every detail of this calendar has been carefully designed with functionality, from its easy hanging to the corrugated line to satisfyingly tear away the page. On the 1st, it is a pleasure to peel away the page and uncover a new month, in a new color that naturally adapts the feeling of the space, an ever-changing art piece. This is echoed by its permanent position in the MoMA collection in New York.

There are very limited quantities of the calendar made each year, which makes it a very sought-after item for your home. I have lusted after the piece for years, imagining it surrounded by my art collection above a quintessentially mid-century sideboard, just like I have seen in the apartments of Berlin on Pinterest.

The Calendar has many functions and is encouraged to be reused in several different ways, as we know great design doesn’t stop after its first lifetime. Each time I remove a month I store it away with the intention to use it as wrapping paper at Christmas, an idea which I have taken from the @stendigcalendars Instagram page. This can be used for gift-giving or for creating an advent calendar. It also works well as a material for book or box covering.
